Founded in 1950 with dedicated volunteers, and a used 1937 Peter Pirsch and Sons Engine bought used from College Park, Maryland for $2,000 dollars. The founding members drove the open cab engine back from Maryland in the coldest part of winter, and was said to be about frozen when they returned with the Engine.

Many things have changed in the department over the last 60 plus years, but dedication to the department and community has remained the same. The department is still 100% volunteer just as it was founded, and our members still put their personal lives on hold on a daily bases to serve the greater good of the community.

The Fire Station is located on Routes 80 & 83 of Dickenson Highway in the Town of Haysi. The community and visitors to our community are welcome to stop by the station. Regretfully someone can’t be at the station around the clock, so feel free to contact us by fax or by phone if you would like to tour the station or have us come by for a community event.

The fire department primarily serves the Town of Haysi and the surrounding communities, and provides Mutual Aid to all surrounding jurisdictions and departments. The fire department also proudly responds with Virginia Department of Forestry for fires in the region and strive to keep our members state certified.

As with most volunteer departments Haysi is always taking applications for community members to step up and become dedicated member of the department, and to help serve the community. With current equipment cost, fiscal budgets, and insurance requirements our department simply can’t afford to allow everyone to join, so if you’re interested contact us by phone or fax and to discuss membership requirements.

The fire department gratefully accepts any donations either monetary or non-monetary; equipment, vehicles, professional services, or time. All donations are tax-deductible, since we are a non-profit organization.

Thankfully the fire department can say the equipment and apparatus are one of the biggest changes that has taken place in over 60 years. We take pride in caring for every piece of equipment and apparatus owned by the department, and realize maintenance and care of the equipment and apparatus could mean the difference in life and death.
